And the Boys - Angus & Julia Stone

I really love this girl's voice.   The music Angus & Julia Stone (they're siblings from Australia, btw) make is so wonderful.  It has a beautiful balance of tranquility and movement.

Here's the music video (Directed by Kiku Ohe)

Lyrics

It's been days now
and you change your mind again
it feels like years,
and i can tell how time can bend your ideas

and the boys go on and on and on and on
and the boys go on and on and on and on
and there's gold falling from the ceiling of this world
falling from the heartbeat of this girl
falling from the things we should have learned
falling from the things we could have heard

well it's been days now
and you change your mind again
all the cracks in the walls reminds you of things we said
and i could tell you that i wont hurt you this time
but it's just safer to keep you in this heart of mine

and the boys go on and on and on and on
and the boys go on and on and on and on
and there's gold falling from the ceiling of this world
falling from the heartbeat of this girl
falling from the things we should have learned
falling from the things we could have heard

and the boys go on and on and on and on
and the boys go on and on and on and on
and there's gold falling from the ceiling of this world
falling from the heartbeat of this girl
falling from the things we should have learned
falling from the things we could have heard

falling from the people that we heard
falling from the love we never earned
falling from the sky that should have burned
falling from my heart

Home by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros

I just really like this song.
It's true.
When you have someone who means so much to you and you laugh and feel free and fall in love at inopportune times for the strangest reasons... you feel like you're home.

and I think this line is my favorite:
"While you were sitting in the backseat smoking a cigarette you thought was going to be your last, I was falling deep, deeply in love with you, and I never told you until just now"

"This video for Home is a collection of some of our favorite memories over the past few years. We hope it feels like Home wherever you are watching this."

Lyrics

Her:

Alabama, Arkansas

I do love my ma and pa

Not that way that I do love you

Him:
Holy moley, me oh my
You're the apple of my eye
Girl, I've never loved one like you

Her:
Man, oh man, you're my best friend
I scream it to the nothingness
There ain't nothing that I need

Him:
Well, hot and heavy, pumpkin pie
Chocolate candy, Jesus Christ
Ain't nothing please me more than you

Both:
Ah, home
Let me go home
Home is wherever I'm with you
Ah, home
Let me go home
Home is wherever I'm with you

La, la, la, la, take me home
Mother, I'm coming home

Him:
I'll follow you into the park
Through the jungle, through the dark
Girl, I never loved one like you

Her:
Moats and boats and waterfalls
Alleyways and pay phone calls
I've been everywhere with you

Him:
That's true
Laugh until we think we'll die
Barefoot on a summer night
Never could be sweeter than with you

Her:
And in the streets you run a-free
Like it's only you and me
Geez, you're something to see

Both:
Ah, home
Let me go home
Home is wherever I'm with you
Ah, home
Let me go home
Home is wherever I'm with you

La, la, la, la, take me home
Daddy, I'm coming home

(talking)
Him: Jade
Her: Alexander
Him: Do you remember that day you fell out of my window?
Her: I sure do, you came jumping out after me
Him: Well, you fell on the concrete, nearly broke your ass, you were bleeding all over the place and I rushed you out to the hospital, you remember that?
Her: Yes, I do
Him: Well, there's something I never told you about that night
Her: What didn't you tell me?
Him: While you were sitting in the backseat smoking a cigarette you thought was going to be your last, I was falling deep, deeply in love with you, and I never told you until just now

Both:
Ah, home
Let me go home
Home is wherever I'm with you
Ah, home
Let me go home
Home is where I'm alone with you

Him:
Home
Let me come home
Home is wherever I'm with you

Her:
Ah, home
Yes I am home
Home is when I'm alone with you

Her:
Alabama, Arkansas
I do love my ma and pa
Moats and boats and waterfalls
Alleyways and pay phone calls

Both:
Ah, home
Let me go home
Home is wherever I'm with you
Ah, home
Let me go home
Home is where I'm alone with you

My Heart Beats for Love by Miley Cyrus

"Everyone has the right to love each other
and no one should feel discriminated or judged for that."

This is not a joke.  I am seriously posting about a Miley Cyrus song.
Here's the situation: before today, I owned none of Miley's music but I could tolerate Party in the U.S.A. just as much as the next person.... but today I got curious.  So I listened to all of the samples of the songs on her new album and kind of liked the anthemic/inspirational/leona-lewis-meets-faith-hill-meets-end-credits-to-a-disney-channel-movie feel of My Heart Beats for Love.

And then I found out she wrote the song for her gay friends who should be allowed to love whoever they want.  and that's when I knew I made the right choice in my first miley cyrus song to ever post/purchase.

Here's an excerpt from an article by Liz Gellar on Gather.com:

Miley had a very touching and open-minded moment Monday night that we should all recognize. At her performance at the House of Blues L.A., she performed a song off her new album titled, "My Heart Beats for Love". "I wrote this for my gay fans," Miley said. "Everyone has the right to love each other and no one should feel discriminated or judged for that."
I thought it was awesome and inspiring that she said this. Miley Cyrus is a role model to a lot of kids and it's important they get this message at an early age. Teenagers and tweens harassing each other is no joke. Think of the horrible news stories we've been hearing lately of kids committing suicide because they've been harassed! Hopefully her fans hearing about this message will become more tolerant of gay people than they already were.

Props to you, Miley.  Who knows, maybe you'll be the next Liza.  The LGBT community salutes your valiant efforts to promote equality.  Now stop dressing like a baby prostitute and I'm sure you'll make an even bigger difference.  (Said with respect.)

Lyrics

I've been stranded on a lonely street
Got lost in the shadows
Fell hard in the battle
The choirs and the suffering
I walked through the darkness
Left broken and heartless

I'm calling out, can you hear my voice?
I'm gonna find you through all the noise
Ooh whoa
You know there's nothing that I wouldn't do
So shine your light as I reach for you

My heart beats for love
My heart beats for love
It's the sound that I hear, tells me not to give up
It breathes in my chest and
It runs through my blood
My heart beats for love
My heart beats for love
Whoa ooh oh oh oh yeah

And I've been told at least a thousand times
It's not worth the struggle, the hurt or the trouble
I keep running up to these front lights
No I won't surrender
I'll wait here forever
Standing here with my flag held high
Oh can't you see that it's worth the fight?

My heart beats for love
My heart beats for love
It's the sound that I hear, tells me not to give up
It breathes in my chest and
It runs through my blood
My heart beats for love
My heart beats for love
Whoa ooh oh oh oh yeah

I'm not to cross this battle field
I'm screaming out, can you hear me now?
I'm holding on, I stand my ground
I'm screaming out, can you hear me now?
My heart beats for love
My heart beats for love
It's the sound that I hear, tells me not to give up
It breathes in my chest and
It runs through my blood
My heart beats for love
My heart beats for love
My heart beats for love
My heart beats for love
It's the sound that I hear, tells me not to give up
It breathes in my chest and
It runs through my blood
My heart beats for love
My heart beats for love
Whoa ooh oh oh yeah

No One's Gonna Love You by Band of Horses - wait, Renee Fleming?

I don't know if you know this... but Renee Fleming just released an album called Dark Hope on which she covers songs by people like Arcade Fire, Death Cab for Cutie, Band of Horses, Peter Gabriel, Muse, and others.  When I first heard it, I was very uncomfortable and felt violated...

Ok actually, here's the real deal.  When I heard this song playing in Barnes and Noble, I was very curious about who was covering it... and then I Shazamed (can that be a verb?) and saw that it was, in fact, Ms. Fleming.
The CD as a whole is strange... but I just think someone should listen to it.  It's bizarre because she's a WORLD CLASS opera singer with the most vibrant career and she agreed to take a huge risk and record what someone at Universal Music decided were songs from the best songwriters of our generation.  I guess I'm glad so many of my favorite bands made it into that category.

Listen to Renee's Version:
since LaLa was recently shut down, there is no way to post this song for you.  LAME.
(illegally download it and then delete it if you want... but if you like it buy it.  cause i don't condone stealing music.)

Lyrics

It's looking like a limb torn off

Or altogether just taken apart

We're reeling through an endless fall

We are the ever-living ghost of what once was

But no one is ever gonna love you more than I do
No one's gonna love you more than I do

And anything to make you smile
It is my better side of you to admire
But they should never take so long
Just to be over then back to another one

But no one is ever gonna love you more than I do
No one's gonna love you more than I do

But someone,
They could have warned you
When things start splitting at the seams and now
The whole thing's tumbling down
Things start splitting at the seams and now
If things start splitting at the seams and now,
It's tumbling down
Hard.

Anything to make you smile
You are the ever-living ghost of what once was
I never want to hear you say
That you'd be better off
Or you liked it that way

But no one is ever gonna love you more than I do
No one's gonna love you more than I do

But someone
They should have warned you
When things start splitting at the seams and now
The whole thing's tumbling down
Things start splitting at the seams and now
If things start splitting at the seams and now,
It's tumbling down
Hard.

Fag Hag by Lily Allen

DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS SONG!? It's amazing.
Here's a bizarre cartoon someone made... the song isn't on LaLa.
But you can download it on iTunes!

Lyrics
I like apple pie
And you like banoffee
We both love shopping for furniture
And meeting for coffee
We pretend we're into art galleries
'Cause it makes us feel clever
We're both in our element when we're on our knees
Whatever the weather

I could be your fag hag
And you could be my gay
I'll never make you feel sad
When you come out to play

I could be your fag hag
And you could be my gay
I'll never make you feel sad
When you come out to play

We don't give a fuck
What people are thinking
I know you'll always look out for me
When we go out drinking
I can ask you things I can't ask anyone
And you'll give me direction
Apart from me, you're the only other person I know
Who reads the travel section

I could be your fag hag
And you could be my gay
I'll never make you feel sad
When you come out to play
I like apple pie
And you like banoffee
We both love shopping for furniture
And meeting for coffee
We pretend we're into art galleries
'Cause it makes us feel clever
We're both in our element when we're on our knees

Foreign Room by Telekinesis

I must say, I was initially attracted to Telekinesis' album cover because of the upside down photograph of Big Ben. (Anyone who knows me knows I'm obnoxiously obsessed with the U.K.)
Telekinesis is Michael Benjamin Lerner's solo project name.  The album was produced by Chris Walla (the guitarist for Death Cab for Cutie.)
They/He is going on tour in May.

Check out the song Foreign Room.

Foreign Room Lyrics

I was walkin' through the night
underneath the starry, starry sky
All alone and full of fright, I came to realize
You won't believe the things I say
Struggle each and every day, each and every day

Freaked out in a foreign room
with a love and I
Quick glance, is it really you?
You gave me quite a fright
Into the living room, where we danced all night
Then I woke up beside you in a fake, but maybe real life

Foreign room

Came in flashing your gun, story of my life
In a picture, we were young
Well, look at us now
Cross the globe a thousand times
but I never made it back
Back to the foreign room, now I lead a foreign life

I know this is going to happen every which way
Too fast and then too slow, I watch it every day
I know this is going to happen every which way
Too fast and then too slow, I watch it every day

But I'm, Not gonna let this get me down
Not gonna let this get me down
Not gonna let this get me down
Not gonna let you get me down

and here is a live video of Telekinesis (+ Band) on KCRW.

Broken Bells is the tasty new project from James Mercer (Lead singer and guitarist for The Shins) and Brian Burton (aka Danger Mouse - of Gnarls Barkley and Dangerdoom).  I am SO excited to get the CD on March 9th.  You can pre-order it on their  website or on iTunes.   But for now, the single, The High Road, is available to download.

Killer by Mads Langer

I heard about Mads Langer yesterday from a good friend of mine.  He likes him and now, so do I.  Hopefully you will too!

I really like the acoustic version of this song... more than the real (produced)
one. I really just like the lyrics a lot. Check out the rest of his songs, too.
I must say some of his album is a little too produced for my tastes but he's talented.

Lyrics

Hello life - shake my hand and break my heart
Open up my eyes and let me see the beauty of the dark

Hello death - I have to put you on hold
Cause I’m not ready for the presence of the cold

It's too late to sleep
Too late to wake up
I'm caught between - daylight and a dream
Now I lay me down in a bed of lies
Knowing any day I'll be betrayed - by the kiss of my killer

Goodbye hope - I guess we're out of luck
It’s time we face the facts and finally give up

Goodbye love I really hate to end so sad
It’s funny how I believed in things we never had

It's too late to sleep
Too late to wake up
I'm caught between - daylight and a dream
Now I lay me down in a bed of lies
Knowing any day I'll be betrayed - by the kiss of my killer

It's too late to sleep
Too late to wake up
I'm caught between - daylight and a dream
Now I lay me down in a bed of lies
Knowing any day I'll be betrayed - by the kiss of my killer

Heartless (cover) by William Fitzsimmons

Hello friends who care about good songs.
I just directed a musical.
That is why I have been M.I.A.
BUT, I'm back!

So William Fitzsimmons, a gift to the world, covered Kanye West's Heartless.  It's beautiful.

Check out this song:

Read about it on Billboard.
Is it weird that I kind of have a crush on him after reading that article? maybe...

Lyrics
In the night I hear 'em talk, the coldest story ever told
Somewhere far along this road he lost his soul
To a woman so heartless
How could you be so heartless?
How could you be so heartless?

How could you be so cold?
As the winter wind when it breeze yo
Just remember that you talkin' to me though
You need to watch the way you talkin' to me though

I mean after all the things that we've been through
I mean after all the things we got into
Hey yo, I know of some things that you ain't told me
Hey yo, I did some things but that's the old me

And now you wanna get me back and you gon' show me
So you walk around like you don't know me
You got a new friend, well I got homies
But in the end it's still so lonely

In the night I hear 'em talk, the coldest story ever told
Somewhere far along this road he lost his soul
To a woman so heartless
How could you be so heartless?
How could you be so heartless?

How could be so Dr. Evil?
You're bringin' out a side of me that I don't know
I decided we wasn't goin' speak so
Why we up 3 a.m. on the phone?

Why does she be so mad at me for?
Homie, I don't know, she's hot and cold
I won't stop, won't mess my groove up
'Cause I already know how this thing go

You run and tell your friends that you're leavin' me
They say that they don't see what you see in me
You wait a couple months then you gon' see
You'll never find nobody better than me

In the night I hear 'em talk, the coldest story ever told
Somewhere far along this road he lost his soul
To a woman so heartless
How could you be so heartless?
How could you be so heartless?

Talkin', talkin', talkin' talk
Baby let's just knock it off
They don't know what we been through
They don't know 'bout me and you

So I got somethin' new to see
And you just gon' keep hatin' me
And we just gon' be enemies

I know you can't believe
I could just leave it wrong
And you can't make it right
I'm gon' take off tonight
Into the night

In the night I hear 'em talk, the coldest story ever told
Somewhere far along this road he lost his soul
To a woman so heartless
How could you be so heartless?
How could you be so heartless?

Tell Her This by Del Amitri

I heard this song on Scrubs.  It's so beautiful.
It's on repeat right now.  Therefore, it's goin' on the blog!

Tell her not to go
I ain't holding on no more
Tell her something in my mind freezes up from time to time

Tell her not to cry
I just got scared that's all
Tell her I'll be by her side, all she has to do is call, all she has to do is call

Tell her the chips are down
I drank too much and shouted it aloud
Tell her something in my heart
Needs her more than even clowns need the laughter of the crowd

Tell her what was wrong
I sometimes think to much
But say nothing at all
And tell her from this high terrain, I am ready now to fall, i am ready now to fall

Tell her not to go
I ain't holding on no more
Tell her nothing if not this; all I want to do is kiss her

Tell her something in my mind
Freezes up from time to time.
